ALEXANDRIA, VA (June 9, 2009)—Praxis announced today that its Spacecraft Communications Payload (SCP) was activated for on-orbit tests following the successful launch and deployment of the U.S. Air Force Tactical Satelite-3 (TacSat-3) on May 19, 2009. The SCP, a part of the Ocean Data Telemetry Microsat Link (ODTML) communications system, provides message data to/from small buoys that drift along the world's oceans, monitoring temperature, salinity, and currents. The SCP allows scientists to access timely environmental information via the Internet, often in near real-time, from areas far beyond the geographic reach of land-based communication systems.
The SCP has also successfully demonstrated the Army Tactical Down-Link (ATDL) mode, which allows for direct communications between the TacSat-3 payload and standard Department of Defense man-portable tactical radios. “The capability to communicate directly from a satellite payload to potentially tens of thousands of standard field radios deployed down to the platoon level is unique, and an important new capability that the TacSat satellites bring to the warfighter,” said Mr. Eric Vandersall, the ODTML Program Manager. “Our rapid development of the ATDL mode, in cooperation with the Army Space Battle Lab, demonstrates the flexibility of the SCP and the utility of our small, two-way UHF data link capability in a wide range of applications."
Development of the ODTML system began in 2002 with funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Continuing efforts are funded under the ONR’s Innovative Naval Prototype (INP) program.
